Day of the Dead Makeup Easy for Kids
No other theme combines color and spookiness better than the Day of The Dead.
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), originated in Mexico as an event to remember family and friends passed.
Celebrated on the 1st and 2nd November, the decorations and colors used traditionally for this day of remembrance and prayer, have now become popular across the world and used for everything from home decorations to posters, tattoos and more (and soon an inspiration for a new Fused Hawaii collection 'Deadly Smile' - watch this space!).
Flowers and brightly adorned dancing skeletons have become synonymous with the Day of the Dead, but perhaps the most recognized symbol is the painted skull, which most people call the 'sugar skull'.
A base of white with skeleton features and painted with vibrant flowers and shapes, these gorgeous skulls make the perfect Halloween or party costume choice.
But how exactly do you create a face that pays respect to these popular decorative icons? Easy! You come here because at Fused Hawaii we do FUN & MAKEUP like NO ONE ELSE!

Easy Day of the Dead Makeup Tutorial
What you'll need:
- Foundation
- Concealer
- Eyebrow pencil (color of your choice)
- Palette of brightly colored eye shadows. Make sure there are lots of vibrant colors like purples blues, pinks and greens. Kesa uses Makeup Revolution, London eye palette from Target .
- Jumbo eyeshadow pencils (optional)
- Body oil (Keisa uses Hawaiian brand ' Ilikope Pure Hawaiian Vanilla Body Oil )
- Spoon (we use the handle for blending eye colors and body oils)
- Dinner plate
- Thin eyeshadow brush (helps with the detail)
- Thicker eyeshadow brush (for blending)
- Black liquid eyeliner / black eye pencil
- Pink or red lipstick
- False eyelashes (optional)
- Colored wig (optional)
Base
Prepare your face with a base of foundation and concealer. This helps your makeup look even, and helps it go on smoothly.
Shape and fill in your eyebrows as you normally would.
Day of The Dead Makeup
For the purpose of this tutorial Kesa has used pink, blue and purple, but you can use your own colors!
On a plate, combine individual eyeshadow colors with the body oil to make each color into a paste.
Using a makeup brush , choose a color to draw circles around your eyes.
Using the same color, start blending the circles around the eyes.
Next, rinse your makeup brush then select another color to draw the flower pattern around the eyes.
Choose a sparkly color that closely matches the color you chose for the circles, and cover your eyelid as you would applying eyeshadow.
Next, to create depth, choose a slightly darker shade of eyeshadow and blend the lids with the outer circles.
Using the black liquid eyeliner, draw around the edges of the flower pattern.
With the liquid eyeliner (or a black eye pencil), draw wings around the eyes. Then it's time to draw the nose. Just copy Kesa for the perfect design!
Before adding the rest of the makeup, you will want to apply your lipstick and very lightly smudge it above and below the lip for a blurring effect.
Now, with your eyeliner or black pencil, draw the mouth lines across the face, then add the black lines/stitches on the mouth, from the top down.
With the thin eyeshadow brush, choose a paler color (Kesa has used pale green) to draw shapes and circles (again, copy Kesa for the perfect inspo). The key to your makeup looking like a real sugar skull is outlining each shape with your black liquid eyeliner or black pencil.
Although optional, if you really want to make those eyes pop, add black false eyelashes.
To complete the look, why not go all out and match the hair and the makeup with a colored wig! These are cheap enough to grab from a discount store and complete the Day of the Dead look perfectly.
